Tidying up and sorting through the junk snail-mail that my deceased mother receives, I found a rather glossy brochure from MCI Technologies Limited, all about its StarTrader program.
I can't think why my mum would have requested any info from them, especially a year after her death (but it seems that they direct mail people). What makes me more suspicious is the "Statutory Declaration" on the back page. It says:
here insert name address and occupation of the person
making the declaration
DO SOLEMNLY AND SINCERELY DECLARE as follows:
1. I shall not sell or distribute, copy or reproducte any
software or literature related to the Star Trader program
without the express permission of MCI Technologies Limited
2. I also hereby agree that all results and information related
to the Star Trader program will remain confidential and will
not be divulged to any individual or individuals, except those
permitted by MCI Technologies Limited.
I make this Solemn Declaration ceonscientiously believing the
same to be true by virtue of the Statutory Declarations Act 1835
Declared on date sig of person making the decl
before me, sig of witness
title of witness
What gets me suspicious is the wording of this. It's much more than the normal "click-through" EULA that one would expect with a computer program. I'd never heard of the Statutory Declaration Act 1835 (so googled and found sections replaced by 19.8 act). Why is it in the brochure? The brochure also contains stories of people who've taken the plunge, got the program and made loadsamoney - a great turn-off and suspicion raiser with me.
Any comments? (PS I'm not taking up their offer - it's going in the non-retrievable filing system under B.)
