"Sunday’s 9.0 earthquake, the strongest on record in the world for the la st forty years, struck the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia in th e morning, causing a tsunami that swept thousands to their deaths and dest royed coastlines thousands of miles away. The majority of the destruction centered in Sri Lanka, India, the Maldives, Indonesia, and Thailand, and t sunamis also caused massive damage along the east coast of Africa, includi ng the Cocos Island and Somalia. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC ) first appeal for donations, issued on Sunday, was quickly fulfilled. The American Red Cross is supporting the Federation’s efforts with a moneta ry contribution to the appeal, and basic materials needed for survival, an d personnel. At this time, the American Red Cross is not accepting International Disast er Welfare Inquiries (IDWIs) because all available resources of the affect ed national societies are focused on relief and recovery efforts. When international disasters strike, the American Red Cross has personnel trained in three key competency areas: water sanitation services, family l inking and reunification and relief supply distribution. Today, an America n Red Cross water sanitation engineer was deployed to the Maldives and two relief workers are on route to Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Additionally, an American Red Cross team of workers trained in relief supp ly distribution will likely be deployed to the affected areas in the next 24-48 hours. The American Red Cross is also coordinating with other societ ies on how to evenly distribute a stockpile of $350,000 worth of relief su pplies pre-positioned in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. These supplies inclu de tents, blankets, tarps, plastic sheeting and hygiene kits. You can help those affected by this crisis and countless others by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, wh ich will provide immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance and other support to help those in need.
