* Just found this news article from July online, about a woman in Harrogate, UK who killed herself as a result of the financial pressure brought about in her life because of these letters. The article implies that justice is going to be wrought against these criminals but so far I've heard nothing about it - at least not in the national papers. Has anyone else on this site heard anything about this?
Coroner calls for probe into 'witchcraft'
By Brian Dooks
A CORONER is asking Trading Standards to investigate what he described as "witchcraft" after a woman from Zimbabwe – ensnared into paying money to "con merchants" – hanged herself.
Rejoice Chishava, the mother of a seven-year-old girl, was already in financial trouble and unable to pay bills when she fell into the hands of people demanding money in return for promising to arrange for her to have good fortune.
One letter read at her inquest in Harrogate yesterday said: "I am going to perform the great Ritual of Astral Protection for you for a period of 21 days. During this time I'm going to use a considerable quantity of some of the most powerful magic powders and incense there are."
One letter claimed to have been sent by Angela Almera from Nuenen in the Netherlands, but another, asking for £23.95 for a "January Guidance Fee", was signed Rosanna Shaw with an Admail address in Faversham, Kent.
It said: "I thank you for your friendship and want to tell you how happy I am to be of service to you.
"I really enjoyed preparing your Mystical Guidance for Prosperity and Happiness and am excited to know you are working towards the success you so deserve. I have already started working on next month's forecast and can tell you good things are coming your way."
Coroner Geoff Fell told Reni Maevesera, of Burke Street, Harrogate, that his wife had been "throwing her money away" and said the people involved were talking "witchcraft".
He said: "Your wife was being conned by these people.
"If you have financial problems please don't give your money to these crooked people. They are con merchants.
"If you ever have money problems go to the Citizens Advice Bureau. Don't go to these cowboys. These people were taking money from your wife and they could not deliver."
Mr Maevesera was working nights at the Asda superstore in Harrogate and returned home at 7.10am to take his wife to work at Henshaw's Society for the Blind in Starbeck. He found her dead on the stairs with a cord around her neck.
Uncertain what to do, he went to her sister's home. She re-turned with him and advised that he should call the police.
Mr Maevesera, who had been married since 1998, said he and his wife had lived happily together. They had no problems except for their financial situation.
Mr Fell asked him to send him all the letters demanding money so that North Yorkshire trading standards department could carry out an investigation.
"These people are garbage," he said. "These people could well have contributed to what Rejoice did.
"If she was relying on these people to get out of the financial problems that she had, they were never going to succeed."
He said he was "appalled", adding: "I think the people who did this were very cruel."
